Uganda Business and Technical Examinations Board results have this morning been released with a total of up to 794 candidates walking away with retakes in business certificates.

According to UNEB reports, the number of candidates that registered for the examinations shot up to 24,938 compared to 17,312 candidates in the previous year. However, the pass rate has declined from 96% in the previous year to 81%. 4480 candidates have retakes compared to 609 for the year 2014.

A total of 2,904 candidates got distinctions, 148 candidates were awarded first class diplomas and certificates, with UBTEB describing this as a good performance.

While releasing the results today, Onesmus Oyesigye, the Acting Executive Secretary of UBTEB said over the years, the board has continued to make strides in ensuring that quality assessment is done. He also says though there is decline in the pass rate, it is not as bad as many may think.

On cases of exam leakage, Oyesigye says only seven cases of exam malpractices were detected and the culprits punished by cancelling their results. This prompted Professor Venansius Baryamureeba, the Uganda Business and Technical Examinations Board chairperson, to advise that the fact that fewer cases of exam malpractices have been reported means all the institutions are becoming more vigilant, but was quick to note that the target they get zero cases.

Education and Sports Minister, Jessica Alupo, who was the chief guest at the event, said government has made deliberate efforts to improve the Business, Technical and Vocational Education sector and will continue to allocate more resources to the department.
