Rev.Canon Johnson Twinomujuni has been consecrated as the new Bishop for West Ankole Diocese. Twinomujuni was installed at a service held at St. Peters Cathedral Bweranyangi in Bushenyi Municipality.

The function was presided over by the Archbishop Stanley Ntagali of the Church of Uganda.

Bishop Johnson Twinomujuni was until recently serving as the Principal at Uganda Bible Institute in Mbarara. He replaces Bishop Yona Mwesigwa Katonene who retired in October last year after heading the diocese for over 10 years.

On the 2nd of October 2016, Bishop Katoneene handed over the leadership of the diocese to Archbishop Ntagali who has been caretaker bishop.

This came on the backdrop of wrangles involving Bishop Katoneene and a section of Christians from Sheema Archdeaconry. President Museveni who was the chief guest at the function commended the Christians of West Ankole for working together and reconciling to forge the future of the Diocese.

Museveni said the 58-kilometre road between Ishaka and Katunguru in Kasese district, which is currently in a bad state, will be rehabilitated.

“On the development front, the government has already identified a contractor to reconstruct the Katunguru-Ishaka road that is in terrible state.”

He also promised to have the 3.5-kilometre road connecting to St. Peters Cathedral Bweranyangi repaired. The President also contributed shillings 10 million to St. Peters Cathedral Bweranyangi and a Toyota land cruiser to the newly consecrated bishop. The vehicle is registration number UBA 163Q.

Museveni also thanked the archbishop for talking about improving household income.

“I appeal to the church leadership to establish parish based poverty eradication programmes, that can work in tandem with Operation Wealth Creation. People of Bushenyi should desist from encroaching on wetlands. I have talked to the leaders here so that we find a way of restoring the ones already destroyed but no more encroachment should happen” Museveni added.

Archbishop Ntagali asked the new bishop to unite all the Christians and be the father to all.

The Archbishop further urged Christians in the Diocese to welcome and support the new bishop if he is to serve them very well. He called for more emphasis to be put on the family institutions saying that this is key for the success of the church and other sectors in the country.

Bishop Twinomujuni  promised to fight corruption as well as use his new position to improve the standards of education in the Diocese that covers the districts of Bushenyi, Mitooma, Sheema, Rubirizi and Buhweju.
